6 Common Sports Injuries

Here’s a look at six of the more common sports injuries and how we can get you back into the game.

1. Ankle sprain

It’s hard to find a sport that doesn’t somehow involve your ankles, and this places them at a much higher risk for injury. In fact, about 28,000 ankle sprains occur each day in the United States, and many of these are results of sports mishaps. From overuse to landing badly, the ligaments in your ankle can stretch or tear, leading to a sprained ankle.

There are many degrees of sprained ankles, and our treatment plan depends upon the severity of your sprain. In mild cases, we may simply recommend staying off your ankle. In moderate-to-severe cases, we may turn to medications, bracing, physical therapy, and regenerative medicine.

2. ACL tear

Not only are your knees your largest joints, but they are among the most complex. Holding this large joint together are ligaments that crisscross your knee, including your anterior cruciate ligaments (ACLs), which are responsible for the rotational stability in your knees. An ACL tear typically occurs when you stop short, change direction, or land badly.

As with a sprained ankle, our treatment approach depends upon the severity of the strain or tear and includes physical therapy, medications, and regenerative medicine.

3. Tennis elbow

While the name of this injury implies that it only occurs on the courts, the fact is that tennis elbow is very common and only 5% of these injuries actually involve tennis. Tennis elbow is a condition in which the tendon in your elbow develops tiny tears and becomes inflamed.

This type of injury is a repetitive use injury, and our best treatment options are physical therapy and regenerative medicine to help heal and rebuild your tendon.

4. Rotator cuff injury

Your rotator cuff is a tough band of muscles that come together to form tendons that hold your arm inside the socket in your shoulder. A rotator cuff tear can develop over time, as is common with activities that include throwing, or it may occur during an acute trauma.

After we assess the degree of damage in your rotator cuff, we implement a treatment plan that strengthens your shoulder through physical therapy and rebuilds the connective tissues using biologics.

5. Groin pull

If you partake in an activity where there’s ample side-to-side movement, you may be at risk for a groin pull, which is a strain in the muscles that run along your inner thigh to your knee.

With most muscle strains, rest is the primary treatment protocol. If your strain is severe, we may turn to regenerative medicine to help speed repairs in your muscles.

6. Back strain

As with your ankles, it’s tough to find an activity in which you don’t rely on your back, especially your lower back. Muscle strain in your lower back is one of the more common sports injuries, and we approach this type of problem using rest, medication, physical therapy, and biologics.
